Book Week at Home
Book Week was celebrated this year from Sunday 22 to Friday 27 August 2021. This annual event was celebrated from home this year, but that didn't make it any less fun!
In the spirit of nurturing a love of reading and Australian literature, Neutral Bay Public School organised a series of online activities to help celebrate, promote and engage students in literature that tie in with the Book Week theme for 2021: ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’.

Virtual Book Parade
My Reading Spot Monday
Students were asked to capture a wacky, weird or whimsical reading position. Examples might include reading sitting upside down on a couch, reading while jumping on a trampoline or in a relaxing spot in their backyard.
This activity aimed to celebrate students who read for leisure at home, as well as break down preconceived ideas about suitable reading places so more students engage in reading outside school.

“The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives. She went on olden-day sailing ships with Joseph Conrad. She went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway and to India with Rudyard Kipling. She travelled all over the world while sitting in her little room in an English village.”

Transfiguration Tuesday
Students were asked to get in costume and dress up as their favourite book character. Old or new - it didn't matter. Alternatively, students were invited to illustrate a costume for a book character using any medium.
The purpose of this activity was to raise awareness of Book Week in the school community and help students realise that a love of reading extends beyond reading time in the library and in the classroom.

"You seemed so far away," Miss Honey whispered, awestruck.
"Oh, I was. I was flying past the stars on silver wings, " Matilda said. "It was wonderful."

Bookface Friday
How well can you match your face with a book?
The aim of this activity was to encourage students to explore a range of different book titles to pique their interest in wide reading and encourage students to be creative with photography or photo-editing skills.

“So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.”
