The Learning Pit

The Learning Pit

At Neutral Bay Public School, we use the Learning Pit as an analogy for learning. The Learning Pit represents a challenge. Taking on a learning challenge is like getting into a pit. You may feel uncertain at times and it takes effort to climb out. When we do climb out, it means that we’ve learnt something new.

When facing learning challenges at home, parents can support their child by referring to the Learning Pit to ensure they persevere so that they keep improving.

At Neutral Bay Public School, we have six learning disposition characters to help students through learning challenges. These characters support students in understanding how they can become better learners.

Self-Assessment Rubric

Individual and peer assessment are best for learning challenges involving learning dispositions. These dispositions, such as perseverance, curiosity, concentration and embracing challenges, are best observed during the learning process at home and are not observable from the end product.

For this reason, teachers are not required to give feedback on these tasks. Instead, students or family members should use the self-assessment
RUBRIC below to determine how learning dispositions are being used to solve challenges.
